Transforming African Mission Mobilization: EMERGING TRENDS
Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
The mission of God, and the Gospel it rides on, is transformative. While God and His Gospel mission never change, the ways and means of rousing His people and reaching His planet must, in order not to end up inappropriately throwing salt at darkness (instead of light), or building bridges where the water course no longer runs. African Christian leaders must proverbially read the contemporary news on one hand and respond with the eternal good news on the other.
Transformation is not an event but a process. Consequently, the mission of transforming African mission mobilization which began at Send Africa 2022 continues unabated in 2023, geographically moving the table around which we gather from Ghana to Kenya, from West to East Africa, with a simultaneous shift of the lens to particularly focus on and engage with emerging trends from the 8th to the 10th of November at CORAT AFRICA, Karen, Nairobi.
Be it oral Bible translation breakthroughs among Unreached People Groups, growing persecution, post-Covid realities, missional innovations with AI technology, the rising tide of women mission leaders and the next-gen, a swelling of African missiology in academia, emerging businesses as mission or diaspora (so-called “reverse”) mission from Africans to the global North, these and many more trends require acknowledgement, scrutiny and strategic, catalytic action.
African mission mobilization therefore would require some urgent and profound transforming in effectively and efficiently responding to emerging trends globally, regionally and locally. In the same spirit of the leaders of the tribe of Issachar who “understood the times and knew what Israel should do” (1 Chronicles 12:32), Christian leaders on the continent and in the diaspora convene at Send Africa 2023 to discern the times and trends and respond appropriately, decisively, as far as mission mobilization is concerned.

THEME: Transforming African Mission Mobilization
There are more Christians in Africa than on any other continent. By 2050 there will be even more Christ followers in Africa than the next two continents combined.
If these numbers would be translated into a significant mission force to complete the Great Commission in this century, then African mission mobilization would require some urgent and effective transforming.
Embedded in ‘transforming’ is re-envisioning, re-imagining, reforming and retooling of the total mission mobilization process itself as well as the end product to deeply change the church and the world. It means re-thinking our theology and practice of mission for 21st century global, transnational, multi-national communities.
The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russian-Ukraine war on mission and mission mobilization in Africa and from Africa calls us to more in-depth missional reflection. In what ways can the African mission uniquely lead from the front? What is our creative and innovative edge that can help tackle the challenges facing African and global missions? What quality of mission will African Christianity bequeath the world in 2030 and 2050? What skills, capabilities and training should African mobilizers possess?
What should be our mobilization priorities in the next 10 years? What should we do now to be the most effective, innovative, productive mobilization force?
At SAN we are persuaded that we cannot keep thinking and doing missions in the same ways and expect new results. We are aware that this historic moment in African Christianity demands that we see African and global missions through new lenses. The SAN 2022 Summit is about going deep and thinking long-term, dealing with the hard questions, and seeking transformation of mission mobilization in the wisdom, power, and enablement of the Holy Spirit.
